Supervision

.

The ambulatory experience takes place at two sites, the AIM Group Practice (located on VC2), the ACNC Washington Heights Family Center at 181st Street.. At each of these sites, house staff continuity clinic is supervised by one or more faculty attending Physicians In Charge (PICs), who are physically present in the suite where patients are cared for. The ratio of supervision is 1 PIC to 4-5 residents. All patients are discussed with the PIC, who may interview and
examine the patient in the room with house staff when indicated, and who reviews and cosigns the medical record. This form of supervision falls under the category of Direct Supervision generally, and Personal Supervision when deemed necessary. For supervision of ambulatory patient care outside of the regularly scheduled clinic session, e.g. patients calling from home, housestaff should contact their assigned outpatient Firm attending or Firm chief or clinic preceptors.

Every patient seen by a resident must be presented to a PIC. Every note must be stamped and signed by the PIC, documenting that supervision was provided. There are no exceptions - the clinic secretaries will not discharge a patient without a PIC stamp.
